Press and Journal – More than half of all companies in the north and north-east are worse off following an overhaul of business rates. The Scottish Government’s own figures have revealed that 23,000 firms have been forced to pay higher charges – as they try to recover from the worst recession for more than 70 years. The statistics showed that 58.7% of 4,409 businesses in Moray, 53.4% of 16,615 in the Highlands, 63.3% of 1,967 in Orkney and 53.3% of 2,129 in the Western Isles were paying more tax under revaluations that came into force on April1.
