Arran gets on his bike in memory of brother Euan
The brother of a young boy who died from cancer has organised a fundraising event in his name.
The Euan Macrae Bike Ride will take place at Aldie Woods near Tain on Saturday the 11th September.
The Bike Ride is a fundraiser for CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity, and is in memory of Euan from Tain, who died from cancer in 2007. The event was the brainchild of Euans younger brother, Arran, who was fed up not being able to do more extreme fundraising activities like the zip slide and abseiling. A theme was also introduced to lessen the focus on cycling as ironically, Euan was not a fan of bikes. This year the theme is the Gruffalo, with a Gruffalo Adventure Hunt.
Last years event was a success and raised over £3500.
Peter Logie, CLIC Sargent’s fundraiser commented, “our cyclists really enjoyed the long route last year in beautiful Tain Woods and the shorter route with lots of magical interest themed on the Peter Pan Adventure Trail was a great success. All were treated to a tasty Forestry Commission barbeque, had the opportunity to be painted as tigers and other exotic creatures, have a go on varying types of natural drums and generally chilled out near the pond in the fairy glade at the end of the two rides.”
Euans cousin, Ben Gordon, from Inverness will be taking part this year. He too has been through the rigors of cancer treatment over the last 12 months and has been treated in Aberdeen for T-cell lymphoma. He is back at school, although he has to go to hospital occasionally when his immune system is low.
Peter added, ”the experiences of Ben and his family are fairly typical of Highland families facing this trauma – a sudden diagnosis turning their world upside down and then many months away from home. It is a rollercoaster journey with the family thinking they are back into a routine and then further unexpected hospital stays due to immune problems, causing havoc to school, work and family life. Ben’s 2 year old brother was looked after by his grans whilst he was away, often at short notice. It is not just the immediate family that has their life disrupted, both emotionally and physically. CLIC Sargent is there to try and help the whole family through this time of anxiety, chaos and disruption.”
Every 24 hours, 10 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia and CLIC Sargent acts as a lifeline keeping families together when the unimaginable happens, providing clinical, psychosocial, emotional and financial care and support to them and their families.
