Streetscape – just bad timing?
There’s no doubt the streets of Inverness are pretty dull, and a good revamp was long overdue. Glasgow, Edinburgh, even Dundee have features that warrant time to stop and savour.
So the Streetscape project, which apparently aids traffic management and pedestrian movement should have been very welcome, and Highland Council tells us it was and still is.
But on the day provost Jimmy Gray unveiled the last cobble, announced it officially complete, and settled the £6m bill, the council said it needed to make cuts worth £100m.
It was bad timing, just like the project itself.
Over the next four years, to effect these cuts, schools will close, services will stop and we’ll end up paying for things we’ve always taken for granted.
People could even lose their jobs.
And the irony is, when these newly unemployed are walking the streets, every cobble will remind them of the folly of their former employer.
